EXPLOSIVES SAFETY TRAINING

FY09 Explosives Safety Training Classroom Schedule

A combination of experience and training requirements must be met prior to being certified as an Explosives Safety Officer (ESO).  This combination of training and experience is required due to the unique hazards associated with explosives and the multiple disciplines encompassed by explosives safety.  Being certified as an ESO is a three step process.  Applicants must complete initial training, follow on training and continual training.  In addition to this training certain courses are mandatory refresher and must be completed at the intervals specified in NAVSEA OP 5 Volume 1 Appendix D.  All ESO and tactical Safety Specialist requiring certification must complete the below courses and on the job if required.  The complete process on how to become a certified USMC ESO can be found in the NAVMC 8020.10.  Information and registration can be found on the Defense Ammunition Center Directorate for Training web page.

Ammo-45 – Introduction to Ammunition
Ammo-49 – Naval Explosives Safety Managers/Supervisors Orientation
Ammo-63 – U.S. Army Explosives Safety
Ammo-67 – HAZMAT Familiarization and Safety in Transportation
Ammo-76 – Identification of Ammunition
Ammo-74 – Explosives Safety Officer Orientation Course

Follow On/Refresher Training (Must be completed within 36 months of initial training and at the intervals specified in OP 5 Volume I Appendix D)

Ammo-29, Electrical Explosives Safety for Naval Facilities (Refresher Course))
Ammo-36, Explosives Safety for Naval Facility Planning (Refresher Course)
Ammo-43, Intermodal Dry Cargo Container/CSC Reinspection (Refresher Course)
Ammo-51, Naval Motor Vehicle and Railcar Inspection (Refresher Course)

Continual Training (Must complete at least one different course per year after follow on training is completed)

Ammo-10, Ammunition Quality Assurance
Ammo-20, Chemical Agent Safety
Ammo-27, Conventional Ammunition Radiation Hazards
Ammo-60, Technical Ammunition
Ammo-62, Technical Transportation of Hazardous Materials (Ammo 37 is the refresher for this course)

Ammo-71, Tools and Equipment

Ammunition and explosives courses other than those listed above are acceptable as long as the course pertains to ESO responsibilities and duties.  If the course is not in the DAC catalog, a copy of the course description will be sent to MARCORSYSCOM Code 204 (PM AMMO) for evaluation prior to an ESO registering for the course.
