The MTVR Trailer program is a USMC initiative to replace the current M105
Cargo Trailer, M149 Water Bull, and the M353 General Purpose trailer with
trailers capable of augmenting the MTVR's increased mobility without
degrading its operational capabilities. This program will develop and field
trailers which will have greater mobility characteristics while maximizing
the commonality of parts across the three trailer platforms.
The MTVR replaced the aging M809/M939 series 5-ton trucks with
state-of-the-
art commercial automotive technology. The MTVR cargo truck has a 7.1-ton
off road and 15-ton on road payload, and a 22-year service life.
The MTVR Variant program developed the dump and wrecker models on the MTVR
platform, maintaining maximum commonality with the basic MTVR cargo chassis
while performing their unique mission. The Marine Corps is also procuring
the Navy Seabee tractor to serve as a the prime mover for the MK970
refuelers. The MTVR tractor has a 70% on-road, 25% unimproved-road, and 5%
off-road mission profile. It has a commercially compatible 2" fifth wheel
with a capacity of 38,500lbs and capable of towing loaded semi-trailers to a
Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (GCVW) of 107,700lbs.
The MAS is designed for the 7-ton MTVR and was developed through the
Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) process. The kit provides complete
360-degree protection as well as overhead and underbody protection for the
crew compartment. The MAS is a permanent modification to the vehicle and
includes an upgraded front suspension and cab rebuild. The kit includes a
removable personnel carrier (with ballistic glass), air conditioning system,
and machine gun mount. Dump and tractor variants began fielding in December 2006 with wrecker variant fielding in Dec 2007.
Reducible Height MAS for all variants except wrecker is scheduled to begin
fielding in Jan 2008.
