Joint Engineering Data Management Information and Control System (JEDMICS)

Related Information (links to Data Management on Deskbook)

WHAT:  The Joint Engineering Data Management Information and Control System (JEDMICS) is the Department of Defense (DoD) designated standard repository system for engineering drawings and associated technical data. JEDMICS is fully deployed across the Services and DLA sites and is providing rapid access and retrieval capability to accurate current technical data by the warfighter and the warfighter support infrastructure. JEDMICS presents an efficient tool for program managers to store engineering and related technical data and make it available to the full range of the support infrastructure. JEDMICS is fully operational and it is available -- key words -- "it is":

Government owned, it offers an affordable alternative to moving/locating your data away from the Prime Contractor data storage environment. This effectively places such efforts as Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) Planning, access coordination, interaction with the DoD standard locator system, etc., in the hands of the government site repository manager and not the Contractor. The bottom line, the Program Manager is not paying his Contractor to manage and control his data.

JEDMICS supports a variety of input and output media, and various output devices, described below.

  • Input: JEDMICS has the capability to recognize various input data from a variety of input media. Input from microfilm (aperture card form) and paper, in engineering drawing standard sizes, were the common input formats when legacy data was being loaded into JEDMICS. Today, JEDMICS has the capability to accept electronically transmitted data and digital data as the primary input media. In addition to hard copy scanning, JEDMICS allows input from PC’s and compact disks.  JEDMICS can store and manage more than 570 file types including 2D/3D vector drawings.
  • Output: JEDMICS produces paper reproductions and Compact Disks (CDs). Data can also be output electronically to a variety of users via File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
  • Query Capability: Users can access JEDMICS data from PC workstations; a family of tools is available, including web access with a Netscape browser. Several COTS software packages are available which can be used to view JEDMICS stored images.
